Description
The Canadian Police College is pleased to offer the Leading Teams in Law Enforcement (LTiLE) course. Based on an extensive needs analysis, the LTiLE has extensively updated the Strategic Policing through Action and Character (SPAC) course. Delivered across 8 days, this highly interactive and engaging program has retained many of the elements of the previous SPAC but places greater emphasis on interpersonal awareness and creating effective and supportive police team environments.
This course is for individuals working in law enforcement who have had some supervisory experience and who are ready to accept the leadership challenges of more complex managerial roles. Participants learn how to improve and adapt their personal management and leadership skills to meet changing social conditions.
Topics include:
- foundational definitions of leadership, (followership, management, and team leadership)
- the evolution of leadership theory and practice
- current challenges facing Canadian police team leaders
- emotional intelligence (mindful leadership, psychological safety, moral injury, and trauma-informed leadership)
- the art and science of delegation (effective feedback and performance management)
- ethical decision making
- conflict in the workplace (crucial conversations and polarity management)
- strategic and systems thinking
- reflective practices for team leaders

- There will be a psychometric exercises and debrief which will approximately 4 hours and must be completed prior to starting the course

Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to Sergeants, Staff Sergeants and Civilian Supervisors serving in Canadian law enforcement agencies
- Applications must include a letter of support from the applicant’s immediate supervisor
- Applications must document two years of supervisory experience. This experience can relate to managing specific work units or supervising personnel exercising a variety of functions
- The college takes into consideration the organizational structure and/or rank when reviewing applications for the course. Applicants may be asked to submit a letter of support from their agency for admission to the course
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments, written and practical
- Various evaluation methods are used, including: class participation, learning reflections, an individual and group presentations
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course facilitator
